R-Space Exhibition

Matthew Whiteside, Electroacoustic Music

I painted this piece in 2012. I chose it because all of the pieces on the CD have elements of soundscapes which are inherently devoid of any visual element. To me this painting is the opposite, it is quite literal in its representation of a landscape but is completely silent thus providing a nice juxtaposition to the music within. Other images of my paintings can be seen here.

Track list

1. Elements (2013, R-Space Commission)

Elements is a new work written specifically to be listened to on headphones. I spent a few days recording sounds from around R-Space and Andrew Cooke's workspace to gather the raw material for the piece.
This piece was composed in my home studio.

2. Vociferous Palpitation (2011)

Vociferous Palpitation explores mechanical rhythm with voice like implications.
This piece was composed in the studios of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

3. Machinist's Visual Fallacy (2009)

Machinist's Visual Fallacy is an early tape piece composed while I was still doing my undergraduate degree in the studios of Queen's University Belfast.

4. Organic Construct (2010)

Organic Construct evokes the aural illusion of a metallic environment inhabited by chittering, glistening creatures.
This piece was composed in the studios of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

I do love listening back to complete albums from my youth and hearing the sounds and internal references I was too young to notice at first. Having a much better listening setup also helps! Today's listening is @thenitinsawhney Beyond Skin, so good! Also how is it 22 years old?!
