Entangled – John Bell Lecture & Concert Performance

£5 – http://www.nisciencefestival.com/event.php?e=37

Electro-acoustic composer, Matthew Whiteside, has been commissioned by the Institute of Physics to write Entangled a new piece for string quartet, electronics and film. Exploring the work of renowned quantum physicist, John Bell from Tates Avenue Belfast, who is also Matthew’s great uncle, the piece will be performed by the Aurea Quartet with a film by Marisa Zanotti. John Bell proved that in the quantum realm, particles are entangled in a ‘spooky’ way. Quantum entanglement was first visualised by the Anton Zeilinger group in Vienna using a camera developed by Belfast-based Andor.

Following the annual John Bell Lecture, which will look at at the applications of quantum entanglement, the evening will conclude with the Aurea Quartet performing a concert of music inspired by physics. This unique Institute of Physics-sponsored event brings music and quantum physics together and celebrates an inspirational role model from Belfast.
